OVER THE WEEKEND, the English town of Aylesbury unveiled a new statue that incorporated all of David Bowie’s artistic personas, in honour of the late singer.

The statue was unveiled on Sunday the 25th of March, and was paid for by a crowdfunding campaign which raised over £100,000. Within 48 hours of the unveiling, the statue was vandalised.

Despite the fact that the statue was paid for by crowdfunding and not the local council, the graffiti read “Feed the homeless first”.

Aylesbury’s Deputy Mayor Mark Willis commented on the vandalism, saying “I want to point out that this statue received precisely £0 of public money. That’s right, £0. It was funded entirely through crowdfunding, by members of the public, myself included.”

Music promoter David Stopps, who led the crowdfunding campaign commented:

I was very disappointed that this has happened, but when I went to see it… It could have been a lot worse. We’re busy cleaning it up now. The paint was on the statue, the wall behind and on the pavement.

BBC shared a video of CCTV that captured the vandal in action.
